Barnham Parish Council's Community Speed Watch scheme is up and running

Volunteers now undertake surveys of the speed of vehicles driving through the village on a regular basis. The details of the offending vehicles are then passed on to Suffolk Police for follow up action (a warning letter or possibly a visit from one of their officers for repeat offenders).

It is hoped that this initiative will help ensure that traffic through our village adheres to the speed limit of 30mph.

The purchase of the speed radar gun was made possible from a grant by Cllr. Joanna Spicer from her County Council Locality Budget (total grant was £1300).

It only needs three people per session to work effectively: one person to operate the speed gun, one to identify vehicle details and one to record details. If you would like to take part, please contact John Bauer (details on the Parish Council page of this website). The commitment required is only a couple of hours per month. Our thanks to Cllr. John Bauer who organises this project.

John has commented, “I was not the instigator of the scheme here in Barnham but took up the reins when I was co-opted onto the council. It has taken quite a time to get the scheme going but we are now in a position where we have a good nucleus of volunteers to enable us to undertake monitoring on a regular basis. It remains to be seen what effect this might have on the speed of traffic through the village”

….. but initial results seem very promising.
